According to Teo Chew Hoon, senior vice president, airside concessions division, Changi airport, the airport works with tenants and retail brands to bring in new-to-market concepts and products exclusive for high-end shoppers.

"These include first-in-the-world duplexes in an airport retailing wines, spirits, cosmetics and perfumes."

There are also facilities designed to offer passengers a first-class airport experience according to Hoon, which include themed gardens, free foot massages, movie theatres, a roof top swimming pool, as well as pay-per-use lounges where passengers can enjoy top range services.

Xiaosha Tang, assistant manager, central and southern Europe, Singapore Tourism Board, emphasised on the retail aspect of the destination, "Singapore is a shopping paradise, with endless choice of world famous brand and innovative local brands.

Luxury brands such as Hermes [...] and Michael Kors [...] have opened their Southeast Asia flagship stores in Singapore."

Hurst further stressed that shopping and dining is certainly a must-do for travellers visiting Singapore, noting "From top luxury labels to niche local designer labels, Singapore's shopping experiences encompasses it all."

SHIFT ON MARKETS

When it comes to affluent travellers, trends show that the growth of Chinese tourists within the peninsula continues to expand significantly, asserted Ang.

"Due to the crisis in Europe and the US, there was a slow down until recently while the economies of these nations are recovering," adding that the shift to Asia is aligned to the continent's growth.

Enhancing this view, Heath, added, "With offices in Hong Kong, Dubai and Singapore, […] affluent guests come from these regions.

However, its reach extends throughout the Asia Pacific region, as well as UK and more recently, Australia."

Hewett, also commenting the market dynamics, indicated that, "We have also seen a shift in premium airline services which as sparked intense competition between carriers, driven largely by airlines for the Middle East [...]."

LUXURY AT SEA

Tang emphasised that Singapore is an easy destination to enjoy and explore, with fantastic air connectivity, to having English as a common language, there is a great variety of things to see and do.

In addition, the destination has two modern state-of-the-art cruise centres and can accommodate tourists on luxury cruise trips.

"Pre- and post cruise trips are promoted to show that Singapore is more than a stopover, but a must visit place [...].

On January 07, Seaborn Encore, the newest luxury cruise ship of the world's finest ultra-luxury cruise line Seaborn, was named in Singapore," further added Tang.

To conclude, Hewett stated that as travel has become an integral component of luxury lifestyle, the expectations tend to lean towards disconnecting from work life, to find tranquillity and peace.

"Wellness escapes are growing in popularly as people seeking a more balanced lifestyle increases."

With efforts blooming more than ever before, whether it is an escapade for pure leisure or a business trip coupled with luxurious leisure, Singapore will leave an imprint on its on-lookers.
